July Update
The monthly comp for July was interesting. The Deep Sea section was won by Jack Wilson with a total of 931pts – no bad for just one fish! He fished with Jack Cronin and landed a huge 100.5kg Southern Bluefin Tuna on the Saturday. Very impressive fish and Tuna is fish of the month for deep sea too. That will take some beating! Plenty of members have been getting into the Fish of the Month comp of late. Last month we saw all 3 categories filled. Randall Pring secured the biggest Tailor for Deep Sea, Bede Gillard bagged the biggest tailor for Beach/Rock and last but not least, Todd Walker weighed in the biggest Jewfish for Estuary. The kids did well in the South Coast Fishing Clubs Association annual Beach Comp on the weekend. They had everything against them with the wind blowing yesterday afternoon and dead low tides for both the afternoon and morning sessions. Our very own superstar fisho Tom Cronin did very well on the mullet and got runner up in the Sub Junior section. The first comp of the year and a pretty good turn out with 5 adults and 3 juniors weighing in their catches in what can sometimes be a quiet comp due to people being away on holidays. In the Deep Sea section we had Grant Keene take the win with a 55kg Marlin, which was also the biggest fish weighed in for the weekend – by far! The Booker Boys had a clean sweep win for both father and son in their respective categories. We have now locked in the date and venue for the Presentation. It will be held at the Gerringong Rugby League Football Club’s clubhouse at Cronin’s Oval in Blackwood St. The date will be Saturday afternoon/evening (start date will notified a little closer) on the 12th March 2016. There will be a bit of fun for the kids prior to dinner, which will be followed by the presentation and then a bit of fun for the adults too! Put the date on the calendar now! Well, what a weekend! March has come in with some great fish and it has been a while since a weigh in like this. The rocks fished well for those who fished them. Mitch C (not Cronin) getting a mixed bag that any fisherman would be proud of and Rob (the golden arch) Mace, baggin’ out on Snapper (10 fold), Groper and some “small” Tailor – his signature fish which is worth $40 for the biggest one this month. The March competition was held on 8th, 9th and 10th. We had a lot of fisho’s get out and wet a line for this competition and our junior members are having a great year, with a few weighing in again this month. It is going to be a good competition with the juniors this year, hope they all keep the good work up. Our Master Chefs were at it again; John on the Barbie, The Pringa cooked up a delicious dish plus rice and Jason cooked his famous Green Groper Curry. The South Coast Fishing Club’s Beach Competition was held on the 23rd and 24th February at the Berry Bowling Club. We had about 9 of our members take part in this competition. They are our really keen fisherman as the weather conditions were not the best, with rain and wind. It was also great to see our juniors back to defend their title from last year and guess what?………. that is what they did. Well done boys! The February Competition was held on Saturday the 9th and this was the annual Pub V’s Club competition. Once again we had a good turnout of junior members, it is great to see them out there fishing, and then weighing in their catches. The best catch of the day by far was Mitchell Cartwright’s huge haul of fish with some really nice Whiting. Our presentation night was held on the 2nd of February 2013 at the Gerroa Boat Fisherman’s Club. It was great to see an awesome turnout on the night and I’m sure everyone enjoyed catching up and telling the stories about the one that got away. Congratulations to all the winners for 2012 and hope you are out there defending your title for this year. The annual Shoalhaven Heads Classic competition was held on the 11th, 12th and 13th. Weather conditions were great for all types of fishing. However in saying that, our Deep Sea fisherman need to talk to one another, as there were a few keen to go, but didn’t have that deckie. The January Competition was held over 4th, 5th and 6th. The wind kept the deep sea fisherman from going any further than the carpark at Boat Harbour on Saturday, but Sunday was much better and a few boats headed out early and caught a few flathead. Rob Mace headed down the coast and caught a couple of Groper around the 4 to 5kg mark, but very little else. The December Competition was held on 7th, 8th and 9th and the Pring boys dragged the boat down to the water and got stuck into plenty of fish out off Gerroa. They were the only ones to venture outside that weekend, but we also had a couple of others wet a line at Crooked River. The November Competition was held on 9th, 10th and 11th. This competition was our annual family Bendalong weekend and I’m confident to say everybody had a ball and is looking forward to next year. It was great to see such a great turn out of club members making the trip down to spend some quality time fishing with their families and mates. The South Coast Freshwater Competition was held on the 13th and 14th of October at Buckenderra. The Stalgis families heading down to take part in the competition. They arrived around lunchtime on the Thursday to a cold, raining and slight snow at Buckenderra. The kids couldn’t wait to get out of the car considering they had been in the car since about 6:30am that morning. The October Competition was held on 5th, 6th and 7th. As this competition was held on a important weekend for some guys and girls being the Bathurst 1000, our weigh-in was on the quiet side. The September Competition was held on the 7th, 8th and 9th. As it is the start of spring the weather was excellent to get out there and do some fishing. The South Coast Fishing Club’s annual presentation night was held on Saturday 11th of August at the Berry Bowling Club. It was a great turn out with many local clubs attending the night. The August Competition was held over 10th, 11th and 12th. The weather kept the deep sea fisherman from going any further than the carpark at boat harbour. With everyone staying onshore, it was still even a hard task to find a spot out of the wind. We had a few brave fisho’s out there trying hard and there were a few that even caught fish! The July Competition was held over the 6th, 7th and 8th. I have to say this particular weigh in was very interesting, with only minutes to spare, Mitch Cronin arrived with two Yellowfin Tuna and snatched the winning title from Jake Atkinson who had weighed in a 57kg Bluefin the day before. Thanks to Mitch, Jake and Jason who went out fishing on Saturday and caught Tuna, it was beauitfully cooked up on the BBQ at the weigh in on Sunday. The June Competition was held over the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th of June. Weather conditions weren’t the best with the usual June long weekend weather. We still had anglers out there braving the conditions to catch those fish to claim that important winner title. The SCFCA Rock Competition was held on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th May with around 40 competitors from the South Coast and Illawarra areas representing their respective clubs. It was nice to see GHFC represented well at this competition. The weather conditions were quite good, which resulted in some nice catches. These catches mostly included Rock Blackfish, Salmon, Groper, Bream, Luderick, Tailor and Trevally. Yet another great weekend for fishing, this May Comp was a Pairs Comp. Plenty of pairs fished, for some great catches and some no catches. The seas rose to the occasion and kept all boats to the river with not much success there. Some great efforts from good fisherpeople had Bel get biggest fish for the comp, a 2.828kgs Salmon only to have Mitch drowning his pride along with the rest of us in a McGuiness. The May Pairs Competition was held over the 4th, 5th and 6th May. The weather conditions weren’t great, but as usual that did not stop our fisho’s getting out there and catching fish. What a great weekend to have the Derek Wishart Memorial fishing comp. The fishing was hard for some and easier for others, some huge efforts were put in by a lot of anglers, some of the spots I fished were so secret the fish didn’t know about it. The Derek Wishart Memorial Competition was held on the 13th, 14th and 15th. This is an annual competition held between the Tooli Hounds and Gerringong Hotel Fishing Club in memory off Derek Wishart. All fish caught are donated and then auctioned off to raise money for the Ashma Foundation. We would like to thank our auctioneer Stuart Warden for helping out, it was greatly appreciated. Publicity Officer’s Report Well, the month’s fishing… Something has to be said about fishing the colour change. In the top end it is where you fish. Rob Mace fished the colour change for Bream at the start of the month for a 5.55kg Kingy off Walkers Beach, after fishing for 2 hrs with pillies without a bite, personally I would have left after an hour. The March competition was held on the 9th, 10th and 11th. After a couple of weeks of rain, the water was brown everywhere and very hard to fish. Quite a few members still got out and had a fish, but only two well seasoned fisherman could land a catch. Les Walsh sifted through dozens of baby Bream to find a couple of keepers and in the process caught two nice Flathead as well.
