Club History

Gerringong Hotel Fishing Club was created on the 2nd of March in 1956. Below is an extract of the minutes from the first meeting of the club:

On Thursday 2nd March 1956 a meeting was called and a club was formed to be known as the Gerringong Amatuer Fishermans Club. Those present were J. Jones, M. O’Keefe, W. Sharpe, D. Sharpe, C. Firkin, J. Walker, L. Graham, L. Hockaday, G. Hopwood, G. Bovis, G. Langton and G. Smith.

The following officers were elected: President J. Jones, Senior Vice President G. Langton, Junior Vice President J. Walker, Secretary G. Smith, Treasurer W. Sharpe, Publicity Officer L. Hockaday. An annual fee of 10/6 per year was decided on with 1/- to be paid each meeting night whether members are present or not. It was decided that another meeting be held on the 8th March and then the club to meet on the second Thurday of each month at 8pm in the RSL hall.

L. Graham moved seconded by L. Hockaday that an account be opened at the E, S and A Bank to be operated by any of the following two; Treasurer, Secretary, President or Vice President. Moved L. Hockaday seconded by G. Hopwood that fisherman over 60 years of age be admitted free to the club and be entitled to all privilages allowed to financial members. Moved by G. Bovis seconded by L. Hockaday that 1 pound be held to cover small expenses.

Apologies were received from A. Noble, J. Johnson and B. Rogers. The meeting closed at 9:50pm.


The club had a competition on the 10th of March from 11am to 6pm with boundaries from Campbell’s Hole to Big Rock. Fish caught were 2 Bream, 1 Jewfish and 1 Flathead which were weighed in at Nobles shop. Every month the club attracted more and more new members. By the May meeting just 3 months later, the club had 40 members.

The club continued to operate until the late 60′s when it finally folded. It was not long until it started again around 1973. This time it was here to stay, and continues to run today as the Gerringong Hotel Fishing Club.
